I recommend writing short stories to become competent at all the basics like hooks, climaxes and endings ::grins:: It also helps with learning how to write sparcely and clearly.
Overall, only you can determine if you are ready to write a novel and how much of an effort you are willing to invest in selling it. The bottom line is that not only do you have to be a writer, you have to have a marketing strategy and perhaps a sales strategy. This level of committment is the tough one.
